What are your initial impressions when you look at this photo?

This photo was taken the year before my grandparents were married and is very special to me. I suspect that there is a lot more happening here than you would realise on first glance.
The first clue is the genuine smile on my grandmothers face (she is in the middle). She rarely smiled, especially in photos, but she looks very happy and relaxed here.
The next indication is my grandfather holding my grandmother's handbag. They also swapped coats.
My feeling is that this photo shows a couple in love, who are shyly flirting.

I first noticed your grandfather and wondered at a man with a coat like that and a purse. I didn't so much notice your grandmother's coat. She does look relaxed and happy! This is a perfect match for this weeks theme.

They certainly appear to be a relaxed group of young people who are happy in each other's company. Your grandfather borrowing her bag and coat was probably enough of a joke to raise that smile.

Oh yes, so shyly, and I remember doing the same coat exchange with my new love as well- a grand photo this is, and you can just tell it was a happy time for this group of friends, and soon to be spouses!

DeleteThough his coat looked a bit short. I did that once when I left school, had to borrow a girls blazer and my arms looked like your granddad did

ReplyDeleteI couldn't find anything about the Mill Trough but as there was a big flour mill at Nhill, it would have been taken near it. I wonder whether they had been to a picture or were just hanging around?

ReplyDeleteFrom letters that I have, my grandfather was away working most of 1931 (getting work on farms where he could and to save for their future) but came back to Nhill on weekends to see my grandmother when he could. From what I gather, Gran would not have been allowed out with him alone.

ReplyDeleteThanks Brett. Although they are dressed differently than we would now, I can't help but note the shoes. I wear similar shoes today to those my grandmother wore over 80 years ago!
