Team Players

Sepia Saturday 136: 28th July 2012

This week I have a selection of cricket photos from the family albums but there isn't a single baseball photo in the albums.

My Grandmother wrote about her father, James (or Jim) Pilgrim, whose father's was also named James
Dad said cricket was often played behind the stables and someone keeping nit" and also "Dad couldn't stand the lime light except at cricket."

All the Pilgrim brothers played cricket.  I am not sure if it was official or unofficial but the team was called the "Pilgrim Seven" and in addition to the seven brothers, also included a brother in law, Ern Muller.

My Great Grandfather, Jim Pilgrim is holding the cricket ball in the centre of the photo below.  I just love the moustaches, braces and ties.

Can you pick the twins?

The Premiership photos feature members of the Pilgrim family repeatedly, year after year.  Nearly 20 years later, Ned, Jim (my great grandfather is now age 47) and Bert were still playing cricket. But now Bert's sons Clarrie and Roy are in the team too with their brother in law Bob Handyside. My Great Grandfather may be older but he is still holding the cricket ball in his hand, is still sporting braces, a tie and a big moustache!

My Grand Aunt wrote:
"When I was a child, Uncle Bert was the only one that had a wireless so the Pilgrim men-folk would go over and play cards while they listened to the test cricket from England.  One night the commentator said 'There's a storm coming in'.  Uncle Bob said ' Be jinks Perce, we better get home before that road gets wet'.  When the others laughed, Uncle Bob tried to make out he was only joking"

And finally a picture of my Grandfather, Allan Scott.

  1. What a fun post you've put together. I spotted the twins immediately! The story about the weather warning is very funny.

  2. What a fantastic collection of cricket memorabalia you have Sharon. I love the idea of the cricket medal being made into a brooch; whata lovely thing to do,

    1. At least the medal was used instead of put away in a drawer :)

  3. Well, I feel like a "duh", I can not spot the twins. I really enjoyed the story of the "storm brewing". It reminded me of the first time some the neighborhood boys and I went to our first "big screen" movie, it was a western, and one of the little boys kept ducking whenever there was shooting going on, so funny.....

    1. Lol.
I was surprised when Wendy said she got it straight away as I think they all look the same. I will tell who the twins are on Monday :)

  4. What photographs. Full to overflowing with atmosphere and history. You can almost hear the sound of ball against bat. Magnificent.

  5. A great family tradition. Now to the twins, well at first I thought James Hoffman and your grandfather were twins, doh. Now I'm going for Bert and Bob on the front row. The days of hirsute moustaches certainly confuse my powers of identification.

    1. Yes the mo's make them all look alike. I will tell the answer on Monday :)

  6. Somehow I expected a cricketing post from an Aussie and you didn't disappoint. Old cricket photos have so much more character than modern ones. You have me wondering what happened to my cricket medals. I know where my striped school blazer is, although I cannot getinto it anymore.

    1. Lol. I loved cricket as a girl and attended the matches in Melbourne. Mum made me a special cricket dress, which I designed, royal blue like the flag and with the Union Jack and Southern Cross on it. All the names of the cricketers of the day (eg Lillee, Chappell, Thompson, Marsh to name a few) embroidered in green and gold around the hem. I got on TV with that dress on but don't have any pictures of it. It wouldn't fit me now either! Hope you find your medals.

  7. Sharon, this is a great piece of history! A well done and interesting post. I loved the team name "The Pilgram Seven" and the story about the storm heading in over the radio.

Hope that you have a great week,

    Kathy M.

    1. Thanks Peggy. I love SS too and being able to share some of these wonderful old photos. I wonder what my grandmother would think about her photos being viewed by people all over the world?

I was contacted by a lady who saw this post. The Baker brothers in the final photos are related to her family. I am always pleased when I can obtain photos from others so it makes me feel good when I can help others :)

  10. Those magnificent men and their enormous moustaches ... and I bet they didn't resort to any under-arm bowling either! The early shots really are excellent, thanks for sharing them.

    1. Lol. I hadn't thought about it but yes the Chappell brothers all had mo's too! I was more a fan of Greg & Ian Chappell rather than Trevour. I was disgusted at the under arm bowling too!

  11. Not sure about the twins and haven't read it yet but your great grandfather James was looking good in that first photograph.

  12. I always look at the photos first and was amazed at the remarkable similar faces. Then I read the caption names and laughed! What a great family heritage. The contrast in each decade's photo is terrific, but the older one is the treasure. Super post.

    1. Ah!! That was my question, so I will not repeat...
All of the Pilgrims have a family ressemblance, but those two were uncannily too similar not to be twins. Glad to have the confirmation. These medals should be mounted in plexiglass or something to preserve them. Great post!! That was most enjoyable!!
      :)~
