Do you have family memorabilia, which is extremely valuable to you but not to anyone else?
Does your family know the stories behind your unique treasures?
To ensure that your unique treasures do not end up in a garage sale if something happens to you, I suggest that you catalogue them now.
Here is an example of my cataloging. I have taken photos of items and made a notation beside them. The booklet is kept with my Will, which states that family memorabilia must be maintained within the family and not sold.

Did you hack into my computer? (kidding) This looks exactly like what I'm doing with my things. When my sister and I were dividing our parents' "THINGS," we struggled with what to do with it all. Where did it come from? Is it valuable? Keep or toss? Some things have a lot of sentimental value but are not worth much. So that our kids will know what to keep and what they have permission to toss, we're compiling a booklet just like you're doing.

ReplyDeleteThanks Kerryn. My Aunty Phyllis indirectly gave me the idea. After she died and family members went through her house, she had put notes with many things so the family would know to keep them.
DeleteI have started creating a listing, but I do like the style of your list much better. And it is the stories that go with them that really give the item value.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the stories are very important. I have a porcelain toast holder that belonged to my grandmother. My son and daughter didn't know what it is was, which made me realise that somethings need to be explained more thoroughly.

DeleteWhat a brilliant idea Sharon!!! Recently my children helped with some "sorting & sifting. Was amazing which of their childhood toys/plates/kitchenware etc. each of them treasured and took home. Also, it's interesting to look on E-bay and see the $'s some pay for nostalgia.

I think I need to do some "sorting and sifting" as we are running out of storage room. I've kept all the kids toys (and mine and some of mum's) but think I need to cull but just can't part with them! Like my grandmother I am a hoarder (prefer the term collector). How glad I am now that she never threw out anything!
