So have you finished your family tree yet?

What is your reaction when someone says "I have finished my family tree"?

Really? Have you linked back to Adam and Eve?

I have been researching for YEARS and feel that I have done very well.  However, the more success that I have, the more research there is to be done!!

Every generation doubles the numbers, so 20 generations is over One Million direct line ancestors to be located and confirmed!!!  This does not even include siblings!

For many years, I have had a family history budget and regularly order certificates.  Therefore I am able to confirm that the details I have for the first 6 generations are all correct but it drifts off from there.

I am a bit of a perfectionist so achieve 90%+ in most things that I do, but not in family history!  I have only located about 5% of the first 10 generations of family.

So rather than say that you have finished your family tree, please say that you have ceased researching your family tree!  It will never be finished!

  1. So true! People who ask that question are not genealogists and just have no idea.

    1. I think the only thing that annoys me more is when people "steal" information. I am happy to share but recognition where recognition is due!

  2. I just love it when people ask if I'm still 'mucking around with that research stuff'.. I just smile and tell them that I'm stuck on some really odd things on their branch of the tree.

That usually gets some interesting reactions.😇
