"Off for a Shot"

"December 1929 -  C Pilgrim, H Rowett, C Smith, L Pilgrim"
From the album of Eva Jean Pilgrim (sister of Lloyd Pilgrim)

Albert Clarence Pilgrim (known as Clarrie) was 19 years old and his cousin Lloyd James Pilgrim was 17 years old in 1929.  The middle two young men are not related to me, as far as I know.

I believe that this photo was taken at Almond Dale in Winiam.  The stable in the background looks very similar to the one pictured in other photos in my grandmothers album.   Did you notice that C Smith is wearing a tie?  He has an aura of confidence about him.

The four young are men standing in among the flowers, which I imagine would have looked fantastic in colour!

I find it to be a very interesting photo, but do wonder if it has been staged by my grandmother?
What do you think?

  1. Although it strikes me as odd to go hunting in a tie, I've seen plenty of similar photos to know that such dress was common. So I don't think the photo was "staged" other than getting the hunters lined up in a group. It looks like the right kind of setting for hunting pheasant or quail. Your grandmother took great photos!

  2. I would not doubt it for a moment, who goes shooting looking so clean & tidy, you need something to blend in more

    1. Can't be after Church as my Great Great Grandfather would not allow "games or sport" on Sundays!

  3. It may have been staged, but it still makes a great match for the prompt - four men standing in line on a sporting activity.

    1. Gran may have made them stand in the flowers for the shot? We will never know!

  4. I reckon it was staged all men in their Sunday's best. Also standing in the flower garden. Perhaps grandma was proud of her beautiful garden and wanted some of it in the photo. Of all things it is a fine photo and a great memorial.

  5. Looks pretty natural to me. A time when there were rabbits everywhere and any opportunity was taken to shoot a few - a couple for the pot and the rest for the dogs.

    1. Thinking that maybe they were placed in the garden though for the benefit of the shot!

    1. Thank you. Gran was very clever with her Box Brownie!

  7. They all wore ties for all kinds of things back then -- and it's a great shot: four guys in ties with guns...

    1. Looking at other photos in the album, the shirt and braces are normal but not the tie. I don't know who the gentleman with the tie is but it makes me think he is from in town?

  8. They look good standing in the flowers like that. If their yard is like mine, they could stand there and shoot a few rodents without breaking a sweat.

    1. Yes, living in the country area near the "scrub", it is likely that vermin were easy to come by!

  9. Great photo Sharon. I've noticed a lot of home gardens in photos back then seem to be a mass of flowers. It would be pretty in colour.

    1. Yes, my grandmother was good with her labeling but not that good to mention the colours!

  10. An interesting photo, Sharon. I hope that the hunt was successful and they brought back a few rabbits for dinner. I notice that there is a fence around the garden which would have been useful for protecting the garden from livestock and pests such as rabbits.

    1. They had rabbits as pets, and they look like they were wild rabbits! Maybe they were stocking them for the stew!

  11. I hope they were shooting further away than the garden. Even these days men on shoots wear ties (well some of them).

  12. Not quite as harmless as the golfers but every bit as interesting.

  13. A wonderful spin on the theme. I agree that the tie and shirts are not out of place for hunting in this era. Rabbits seems likely too.

    1. I had a couple of shots to choose between with 4 men but this one seemed most appropriate!

  14. These men were stopped for a photo while probably on their way to show their prowess and bring something back for the pot. If there had been another photo it would have shown their bounties rather than the flowers!

    1. Ah, I could have matched with a photo from another album, which shows the rewards of another shoot!

  15. It doesn't look too staged to me. It's wonderful.
